My research focuses on the development of democratic attitudes and practices in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa.

I teach in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Cape Town www.humanities.uct.ac.za/postgraduate/departments/politicalstud

I am also Director of the Democracy in Africa Research Unit (www.cssr.uct.ac.za/daru) located within the Centre for Social Science Research (www.cssr.uct.ac.za) at UCT.

I have a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (1992).

Research Projects

-Co-founder and Senior Adviser to the Afrobarometer, a regular survey of public opinion in 20 African countries  www.afrobarometer.org.

-Co-director of the African Legislatures Project, a study of legislators and legislatures in 20 African countries

Publications

I am co-author author (with Michael Bratton and E. Gyimah-Boadi) of Public Opinion, Democracy and Markets In Africa (Cambridge University Press, 2004) and have published on this subject in in the American Journal of Political Science, British Journal of Political Science, World Development, Journal of Democracy, Democratization, and Party Politics.
